Among Norton and McAfee, which antivirus software is best and why?

Peter Norton blew his brains out witha pistol. does that answer your question. Any Anti Virus is just another Program to stop a program from stopping a program that might start a program.
Norton is good, McAfee is good. They are as good as the Viruses they make.
Or you can pay Windows by the mntgh to stop Viruse, well they dont stop them, but they claim that you will have some protection. Kinda like a condom with a hole in it. it might work. it might not. But you will pay.

Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007 !

This is the most complete & user friendly mainstream AV software on the market. It's a "not in your face" program that allows you to legally install it on up to 3 diffentent computers using the same licence.

The features are far too many for me to go into detail, & include settings for "password & personal data protection", "web site filtering" & password protection for the program itself so that no other user (or hacker) can modify its settings.

Don't let all this intimidate you ....very user friendly & very very prompt user support. Give it a try & you'll soon afterwards be chuckling at the very mention of Symantec or McAfee ( I've got legitimate versions of both these & still went out to buy Trend Micro).

30 day trial:

FYI - keep in mind that NO antivirus program is enough to keep you completely safe... you should also use a good spyware defender & adware protection. Try these free ones :

Antivirus software is must-have protection. This review picks the best antivirus software based on its virus detection abilities, features, and breadth of protection. Whether you're seeking total system coverage or an ala carte solution, each of the following products provides superb virus protection for Windows-based PCs. Because every system is unique, evaluate several of these antivirus products to find the software best suited for your PC and your level of experience.

1) McAfee VirusScan Plus
Antivirus, antispyware, and firewall are included in this 'mini-suite' from McAfee. An ideal candidate for those seeking robust protection without all the bloat of traditional Internet security suites.

2) McAfee Internet Security
For those seeking a full blown Internet security suite, McAfee Internet Security offers traditional antivirus, firewall and antispyware complete with spam and phishing protection as well as backup utilities. McAfee's superb detection rates are near legendary.

3) BitDefender Professional Edition
Softwin's BitDefender Professional protects against viruses, spyware, and instant messaging threats, as well as offering firewall rules to block undesirable traffic and a privacy gateway to keep your identity and preferences private while surfing the Internet.

4) Platinum Internet Security
Panda Software's Platinum Internet Security combines antivirus, firewall, and spam filtering along with its highly touted TruPrevent Technology. Both AV-Test.org and ICSA Labs have tested the TruPrevent claims of behavioral, non-signature detection of new malware and found the claims to be true. (TruPrevent Technology can also be purchased separately as an add-on to antivirus protection from other vendors).

5) PC-cillin Internet Security Suite
Building on its solid antivirus capabilities, PC-cillin Internet Security Suite automatically checks for new virus updates every 3 hours and the spam prevention includes a whitelist, blacklist, and Bayesian filter - all at a price substantially lower than many other antivirus suites. If spyware is a problem, consider supplementing the spyware scanner in PC-cillin with either Windows Defender or CounterSpy.

6) Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal
Kaspersky offers excellent antivirus protection, perhaps unsurpassed in its ability to recognize various compression algorithms and accurately detect infected files contained within the archives. However, their interface is rather convoluted and may be best suited to more advanced users. Should be used in conjunction with a firewall.

7) G Data AntiVirusKit 2005 (AVK)
AntiVirusKit 2005 (AVK) provides a double layer of protection, bundling two of the best antivirus engines - Kaspersky and BitDefender - under a single, easy-to-use console. Using these engines, AVK was the only product out of 35 tested by AV-Test.org in 2004 to achieve 100% detection of both the basic WildList viruses and its more comprehensive collection of zoo viruses. An ideal standalone scanner for those who desire an ala carte solution.

I prefer McAfee. I have seen alot of bizarre problems with Norton in the past (updates that don't install, performance issues, etc.).

Take a look also at free anti-virus software such as Avast. It's quite nice!
