Because flies like to fly in the center of the room, and most light fittings are in the center of the room as well.

i believe in the past, the moon was used as a guide by the flies and other flying insects, much like a compass.. it'll be much easier to find a mate if u are going in the same direction. so now, with the lights, the insects are confused and stick with the lights instead.

They could be attracted to the heat it releases, being ectotherms. Or they think its day and they're just tryin to get out.
