Can anyone advise on software for me to buy for my son, he's 11yrs old plays piano and drums, I would like something for him to create music on the PC, like mixing sounds etc., (I dont know much about it!) I've heard of fruity loops but isnt this american? does anyone know anything about Magix music maker which I've seen? I dont want anything too complicated either, although he does pick things up quickly on PC.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I started out by using ejay (go to www.ejay.co.uk) It's the best software to use if you're just starting out and for a basic software there's loads you can do. It comes in all genres from Dance to Hip Hop and you can even buy sample CD's with more sounds. I haven't used it in a while but when I was you could even add your own sounds from your computer. I enjoyed it, so I think he might as well if he's into his music =)

The best bet is GarageBand for Macintosh. Sorry, no GarageBand for PC yet but because of the cross-platforming now possible with other music software products, especially Finale and Allegro, I am predicting a PC version of GarageBand in 2-3 years. The most basic GarageBand has royalty-free pre-recorded music loops for you to use....about 24 such loops have hip-hop beats. GarageBand almost works like Master Tracks Pro...it is a virtual sequencer. For instance, when you upload hip-hop beats to tracks, you can use the cut-and-paste method to not only create a realistic hip-hop beat for a few measures...you can make a hip-hop song out of it....as the hip-hop music beat sequences loop over and over as long as you want. You just simply need the lyrics. More good news....Macintosh computers don't require as much executable code or all of those .exe files like PC computers do, so there is less chance of having corrupt software or viruses when you install GarageBand.
