Actually I have met many and knew many but then I was around because of my job.
Hanging around is not the way to get to meet them. you need to be real brazen and just walk in as if you knew exactly what you are doing. Cary a small brief case but not a camera. Dress the part and you might succeed. Even if you don't what have you lost. People just hanging around are fooled into believing the stars are coming in one way an actually they do not. The set up people and such will come in that way but not the stars.
Do not be afraid to talk to people directly and don't be all shook up as Elvis says.
After a couple of tries you probably will get the hang of it. It does work most of the time. If you can get a press badge then you will have a better chance.
Now I will say that I have not been around the business now for some years so since all the security that is going on in the states Ii may be more difficult. A note pad and pen might be better now.

I was the first person in line for a Creed, Saliva, 12 Stones and Cinder concert in Little Rock. The lead singer from 12 Stones came out and signed autographs and asked me how long I had been in line. I was there 10 hours before the show and got on the front row of the mosh pit. It was a great experience, but I'll never do it again.
Now, as a member of the media, I usually get to hang with the bands that play around here after their shows.

I did years ago for a prince concert at the side of wembley arena, the band came over and chatted but felt embarrassed because of all the fans we're acting star struck and I didn't want to be the same. Also I was waiting in the after show room for Robbie Williams but decided to take the last tube before he arrived.

My friend and I arrived at a Backstreet Boys concert about 5 or 6 hours before they were scheduled to play in the Iowa City stadium. (yes, teeny bopper fan was I...)
We didn't see the actual BSB , but we did get into the building as soon as the doors opened, their band was up on stage warming up, and we went up to one of the band members - the keyboard player, I don't even remember his name, maybe it was Danny or something. Gave him a beanie baby Canadian Goose (inside joke), a bottle of Maple Syrup, and a towel with the Canadian flag on it. (My friend was visiting me from Canada...). My friend was too shy to go up to him so I was the one who went to give him all the stuff...he gave me a hug afterwards. It wasn't even one of the BSB and I was still shaking like a leaf, could barely stand! :o) Tried to act all normal though...just told him I loved their music, thought they were really talented, was looking forward to the show. Great guy, very nice. :o)

Nope, but I did meet the drummer of the Pretenders (Martin Chambers) whilst walking down a street. He passed me by, I did a double take and asked him if he was who he was. We talked for a few minutes, and then I pointed him in the direction of the nearest "Tobacconist shop" (Brit's are so cute with their language), and went on my way. It was cool.
