I'm thinking of getting a "97" strictly for good weather driving. It would be off the road in the winter. True they lack power. But as I understand it, they are pretty dependable and fun cars.

I own a 2000 Miata, and it's quite possibly the most pleasant car to drive that i've ever own. You can only seat two people, which I find an advantage. The trunk is small, but cavernous when compared to the Toyota MR Spyder, Pontiac Solstice, or Saturn Sky. Some think it isn't powerful enough, I disagree and there are several inexpensive "mods" available. I personally find it hard to say anything bad about my Miata and I receive compliments on it daily.

If you live in a state where it snows, I would strongly suggest a winter car as the ground clearance is very low and if the car isn't equipped with traction control, it won't do very well on snow and ice.

All in all, I'd say it's the most enjoyable car I've ever owned, and certainaly the easiest to parallel park. I will never be without a Miata again. I'm a 34 year old straight male, and I could personally care less if anyone thinks it's a girl's car.

I have a 91 Miata and a 95 Miata and have driven them a total of over 100k miles. The only real issue to me is that you fit in it. As it sounds like you will use it for a second or third car the lack of storage space and the small size should not matter. If you don't store it inside I would buy a quality car cover as the tops are pretty expensive and only last about 10 years if you leave them outside a lot.

The dependability is amazing. My 91 has 211,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. It even has the original clutch! Miatas are among the most reliable cars you can buy according to several sources.

What the Miata lacks in power it more than makes up for in handling. It was really designed from the ground up to be a true sports car. It's not a result of parts bin engineering like many other "sports cars." That may be the reason its won so many awards from Car and Driver and Road and Track and many others.

I have a 91 that I picked up used 8 years ago. I love mine, it's the best fun for money I've had. If you're worried about power, go to Miata.net and get a turbo or supercharger, $2000 and it'll get you plenty of power. Snow isn't too bad either, but it sits low, so be careful.

Great little car. Huge disadvantage.. if you are tall, you wont fit.
I'm comfortable in it, I am 5'10". If I was any taller... I dont think I would enjoy any drive over 15min.
