Most people would consider it a good idea. Without SOME cohesion, a society is in turmoil or conflict. If there is no common language, for example, as in South Africa, people cannot communicate and it is difficult for them to understand one another.

But I would say a society can have too much cohesion. Too uniform an agreement on values and then dissidents are not tolerated, creativity is suppressed.

I prefer a middle way where differences are respected and welcomed and are perceived as a source of curiosity, or choice, not of threat.

Maintaining that middle way as a society evolves from year to year requires continuous discussion. For eample the present debate in Britain about limits to freedom of speech in regard to incitement to religious hatred.
