INFLAMMATION OF THE TENDON

2006-11-09 00:28:42 · answer #1 · answered by michael b 5 · 0 0

(HealthDay News) -- Tendonitis is a condition in which a tendon has become inflamed, and can be caused by a sudden injury or prolonged stress. Strenuous physical activities can often cause a bout of tendonitis, whether the person is fit or not.

Symptoms of tendonitis usually include tenderness and pain at the site, and pain when the muscle attached to the tendon is exerted or strained. Consistent stress to a tendon, such as during daily typing or certain sports like tennis, can also cause tendonitis to flare.

Symptoms
Sometimes the tendons become inflamed for a variety of reasons, and the action of pulling the muscle becomes irritating. If the normal smooth gliding motion of your tendon is impaired, the tendon will become inflamed and movement will become painful. This is called tendonitis, and literally means inflammation of the tendon.

The Cause
The most common cause of tendonitis is overuse. Commonly, individuals begin an exercise program, or increase their level of exercise, and begin to experience symptoms of tendonitis. The tendon is unaccustomed to the new level of demand, and this overuse will cause an inflammation and tendonitis.

Inflammation of the tendon. I had achilles tendonitis and not only was this painful, but also gave me a strange "popping" sensation in my achilles tendon. This was due to the tendon temporarily sticking to the tendon sheath and then freeing itself.

Tendinitis simply put is inflammation of the tendons and their sheats (coverings). Tendons connect muscles to bones.Tendinitis is caused by too frequent use of a muscle group especially by clumpsy movements. For example, there is a right way of holding a golf club and swinging it to take a shot. Any movement short of this skillful maneuvre may cause muscles strain with accompanying tendinitis. Treatment is by rest, ice compression to reduce swelling and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen for pain relief.
