It sounds like the jar did not seal properly since mold has gotten in the jar. I would not think it is safe to eat.

It is not safe to eat. Nothing with mold on it is safe to eat. Chuck the whole thing and get a new jar.

I just found that the seal on a jar of grape jam failed. There's no mold, but would it be OK to eat?

Either way it's bad. Regular mold will give you stomach problems. If the jar lid was bulged out, it will kill you. Bet the jars were not sterilized enough.

Just scrape off the top half inch and it should be fine, but keep the jar in the fridge and use it up quick

I would just spoon off the mould and eat the rest. But I don't think you would get that answer from a scientist. I just hate to waste my favorite jam. I believe the risk is minimal.
