Yes. I always wanted to know how those buggers MAGICALLY appear from NOWHERE when you leave a banana lying around!
How does that happen?

The good ol' drosophila. One of many experiments I have undertaken at uni was determining the heritability of the heat tolerance trait within a sampled population of Drosophila melanogaster through artificial selection. An original population was subjected to 38oC for 10 minutes for the downward (heat intolerant) selection and 20 minutes for both the upward selection (heat tolerant) and control. Flies were selected upon the basis of resistance or susceptibility to heat and allowed to breed for three generations. The heritability estimates were obtained from the counted flies for each selection group.
Just be careful when knocking 'em out wth the CO2 that you dont kill them or let too many fly away when counting! or swallow any for that matter....

We did an experiment where we kept a population alive in a tube with mashed banana at the bottom. Once a week, week knocked them out with a drop of ether and counted them. The idea was to measure the population growth curve and to se at what point their own waste products poisoned the environment and caused a die off...

Another was to keep a healthy population alive and periodically check the rates of mutations like red eyes/black eyes, wing shapes, etc...

Don't know if these are advanced enough for your purposes...
