It's difficult to say exactly why they would elect a socialist senator. I believe that people in general (but especially Americans, sadly) forget much to quickly things that they should remember from history. They forget how socialism has always brought dictatorship. They forget that socialism has never yet succeeded in the "utopia" sense promised by Socialists amd Marxists. They forget that every socialist nation has become impoverished. These and so many other things do they forget.
I do fear, however, that this is indeed a harbringer of things to come. Many people are becoming disenchanted by the capatalist economy we have, though it has made us so great. They want something new that promises great things. so they accept it, without looking at the historical story of those changes.
Socialism despises capatalism and democracy. Socialists will work to create problems and show themselves to be the healer of all our woes. It does not surprise me that there is a Socialist in office - America is asking for it.
In the not too distant future, we will have a Communist. Then the fall of the great USA (which I love with all my heart) will begin.

Well, I guess not, since he was the first socialist mayor of Burlington, VT, and, then, first socialist rep in the House prior to being elected to the Senate. And Vermont is still on the map and enjoys the reputation as being one of the best states in the Union.

I think Vermonters must be living with their heads up their butts. Sanders is more Communist than Socialist. His views are so extreme, there is no place for them in the Senate, let alone in the USA.
It is scary to me that anyone would vote for him, for anything.

The Bible says that God puts those in power over us that he would have over us. So how could they be hell bound sinners even if he is a Socialish Senator?

No to your question. It does make me wonder about the quality of the other candidates that they voted this way.
