Lincoln's reputation increased dramatically shortly after his assassination, partly due to the rituals carried out-- his numerous funerals, the funeral train, the sermons. His death was timely in the sense that the nation was over the tragedy of the Civil War but facing the difficulties of Reconstruction. Lincoln was conveniently relieved of the duties of successfully reuniting a nation that had polar views on many issues.

Before his death, Lincoln was not highly respected by the majority of the public. He was reelected with only 54% of the popular vote and many people were not satisfied with the way he ran the War. He was extremely hesitant, not willing to fight a total war for a very long time, and once Lee surrendered, Lincoln was too lenient in the views of a great number of people.

Politically speaking I believe that Lincoln was a "great statesman." However, I do not think that he was the best president our country has seen.

Personally, I like Jimmy Carter. I think he is our most misunderstood president.

Definitely not Lincoln!

Simply based on the constitution itself. Lincoln shredded American freedom and rights during his tenure as President. He declared martial law against the entire nation. The emancipation proclamation in itself was a great document with a great ending, however it was a declaration against the guidelines set within the constitution. Three branches of Government, congress had already ruled on the issue and so had the courts, but Lincoln declared it to be so and ordered the military to enforce it (even a good outcome, is bad when the republic's rules are ignored) Lincoln was a great president because mainstream history books give him favor.... Read the book "The De'Facto Government of the United States" for more on Lincoln. And Clinton... Please, he was another who shredded the constitution for what he thought was right, however not everyone is served when the rules of the Republic are not followed.

Time will show, Clinton will be the MOST best President in U.S History.

Nobody until CLINTON dealt with issues of ALL The People Of America, at the detail level ever seen in history so far.

Bush has done away with that outlook for true leadership for America.

America have to SEEK very smart people for these times of good leadership which represents, "We The PEOPLE OF AMERICA".

I have to disagree, mainly because I know far more about FDR & Truman.
When you look at the world in 1942; the Axis was easily destroying our way of life. Both Germany and Japan were unstoppable.
We were going to be conquered.
