I could never live without my dots, commas, colons, semi-colons, and especially all the nice little characters that are created when holding down Shift and pressing the little numbers at the top of the keyboard...my most favorite is the asterisk!

I personally like the implied... um... sound effect.

It's a perfectly acceptable form of punctuation - I used them in my writing long before my keyboard was connected to a computer.

We all need to pause... now and then.
