My wifes parents are from Ohio, and mindlessly vote Republican every time. Well, last night they were in town, and were lamenting the loss of George Allen, and the other Republican incumbents. My wife's mom actually said, "those evil Democrats." Even if I explained to them that George Allen is racist, Ney and Delay are corrupt, and Foley molests kids, it would do no good.

Most of us who are middle of the road, and are willing to vote for the best candidate of either party know that there is good and bad in every party. My question is this. How can one argue with ignorant, right-winged, "Christians" who mindlessly vote Republican every time?

Why do you want to pick that fight? Do you really think that anything you will say will change their minds? Of course not, because they're not making rational voting choices. But insulting their political views is not a good way to create a good family atmosphere. Do you still want (have) to see these people? Then don't try to argue with them.
If you feel that you must say something, make it in the form of a respectful disagreement:
Iunderstand you feel that way, but I'm not so sure that Democrats are evil. In fact, Democrats have done some pretty amazing things for our country over the past few years. (Insert examples if necessary, such as civil rights, ending elderly poverty with Social Security, etc.) But it seems like we're going to have to agree to disagree about this issue, all right?

If they persist, simply ask them not to talk about politics when they visit. Tell them why, and if they're otherwise reasonable people, they'll agree.

I am a conservative "Christian" that is also a Independent. Don't lump all people that are like your in-laws as "Christians". I voted a split ticket this election as I did the last one. It works both ways. Have you ever heard of Yellow Dog Democrats? It is a large block of southern Democrats that coined the phrase "that they would rather vote for a old yellow dog than a Republican" Most of them are Christians too.

By not arguing with them and relating to them in a way other than as "ignorant, right-winged 'Christians'" who are "mindless."

You and your in-laws are never going to agree on politics. Make a pact with them to not discuss political issues. Make it a rule of your house that they do not bring up political issues. Refuse to rise to the bait if they do.

Change the subject.

We are all multi-faceted people; political opinions are just one (tiny) aspect of our personalities. I'm sure your in-laws have interests and opinions that are not political. Try to see if you can talk with them about these instead.

They do seem brainwashed don't they? The thing is that they are simply jengoists. They blindly support the government, just because supporting the government is the "right thing to do". Funny, the 2nd definition of patriot in the Webster's Collegiate Dictionary is "someone who stands up for what they believe in esp. with presumed opposition from the government."

LOL I feel your pain. You'll never win. Declare your home a "politics free" zone and change the subject whenever it comes up. Or else get real good at biting your tongue.

ignorant, right-winged, "Christians"
I would start by not thinking of them in those terms If you don't just remember they are still your wife's parents. You might not agree with them but they are family now, plus you never know as you get older your opinion may change.

Considering your gracious depiction of your in-laws, maybe you want to consider a god divorce attorney. I am sure your condescension really wins them over.

But good for you, you named 2 Republicans and correctly labeled them. As for George Allen...perhaps the voters of WV might want to examine re-electing and naming every government project in the freakin state after a KKK member in Robert Byrd. Foley is disgusting, but "molest" is not sending dirty e-mails.

We live in the USA, remember where people have the freedom to form their own opinions. No dictators allowed.

You can't win in an argument with fascists so its best to keep voting to limit their power and educate those who don't vote as to why it is so important to vote. A no vote is a vote for the extremists, hate mongers who would strip them of their rights and freedoms.
