poor you - I had the same problem - tried downing tools BUT I could not stand the mess so then i had a brainwave BOXES !!
Get a box for every member of the household and clearly lable with their name THEN put all their junk in their box - warn them that if items not temoved from box in 24 hours you will bin them!
it worked for our household BUT you do have to say what you mean - and as for the boxes well you could use posh ones or just get cardboard boxes from the shops. Once you have got them into the habit of putting things away start stage two of your campaign divide all cleaning and tidying duties among the household - even small kids can do a little dusting (they are great at dusting skirting boards and chair legs!!! ) once you have got this going move on to stage three: laundry: load machine every morning and last thing at night - makes it a breeze just encourage everyone to place laundry in one place once a day.
again they may moan BUT keep at it encourage them dont whine
about the mess they make.
Stage FOUR: by now you should be looking at your home and seeing the improvements you have all made to celeberate why not have a special meal together (again working as a team - one planes meal and shops for ingrediants another person cooks and maybe a person lays table and clears it and finally you all do the washingand drying and putting away of plates - this regime has truly transformed our home into a happy tidy clean place to live - it may sound a bit like living in the army but it has restored
order into our lives and we have all stopped moaning about the time we were wasting looking for things - even thought i confess that some cupboards still need a little 'work'

I have the same problem -- I created a "chore chart" for my kids. They (and hubby) don't view the messes the same as I do. The kids now have the chart that they are expected to follow everyday. (I have to remind them all of the time -- grrr). I ask my husband for help. It's frustrating, but I view it as being the CEO of my house. I have to delegate to get things done.
If I don't ask, they won't help. As frustrating as it is - I've come to accept the fact that I have to ask and delegate.
If you have children, base the chores on their ages and abilities. Keep in mind that not only are they helping you, but they are learning life lessons.
It's not easy, but I wish you the best of luck!

They know you will do it no matter what, because you are tidy.
Try not cleaning up at all until they complain that everything is a mess and then negotiate their help.

they are probably used to u cleaning up after them. you should stop for a day or so and they'll soon realise its wrong to let other people clean up after their own mess and learn to clean up after themselves
i know because its the same with me

Leave home - they'll notice eventually from under the piles of junk.
