HAHAHA!!!

America calls it soccer because of the guy above, Why? must we argue such petty things.

Also American football in its early history was similar to soccer. A combination kicking, and running with a round ball. Over time it developed to what we have today. An aggressive sport that is enjoyable to watch. So, if you study alittle history you will see the following:

Field style game using a ball was created around 1800's(somewhat modern version) in England from this game developed:

Soccer(futibol, football, Fotbal)
American Football
Aussie rules Football
Rugby
And some forms of the Gallic games which are combinations of usually: Rugby and Soccer

So, just maybe before you rant about American "soccer" you may want to read alittle about the sport of "football".

Thanks

To distinguish from American Football. But they also call it soccer in South Africa and they are getting the World Cup in 2010 (maybe). In the South African case it is just pur ignorance so they have no excuse and currently they are promoting the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Ignorant twats they cant even play football and the Country is like a toilet.

Because they are ignorant to what the rest of the world does and think anything that exists outside their country is not relevant.

Hey chocolahoma... your 'Bubbas' have to have a rest after every effin play and the game has to go for like 5 hours because they can't handle the pace. Pads to protect everything, 300 pounds of FAT not muscle and a little rest after they run 10 yards. LMAO brains get hurt, bones broken, try put them up against Rugby players with no padding & make them run for 90minutes without a break... bumpunchers.

I love soccer!!! it helps the uneducated sport fan differentiate between footy "union" or "league" without football "soccer" entering the equation......Between us, soccer is gay!!! (unless you're Australian and hold any hope of coming anywhere in the greater scheme of the sport!)
Using "gay" before the time homosexuals cornered the market!

Well if you really want to know, it's not an American term, it's British

"Soccer is an abbreviation for Association Football. The Football Association was formed in London in October 1863 when representatives of eleven clubs and schools met in an attempt to standardize the rules of the game. One of the rules prohibited the carrying of the ball, a rule that would lead to the Rugby-oriented clubs leaving the Association several months later. The name Association Football was coined to distinguish it from Rugby.

By 1889, the abbreviation socca' was in use, and the spelling soccer had made its appearance by 1895."

Though I personally think football makes sense, but oh well.

I don't even know why they call it "American Football"! I mean, they use their freakin hands! It should be called handball or something! Football is our game and Americans shouldn't be calling it soccer

Because the game was invented by kicking around a pair of socks rolled up into a ball.

Please don't knock the yanks m8, they are the only true buddies we have, ok there are a few loud mouthed ones but u get that World wide. I am disabled, and every American I have spoken to on the net have all been very polite, respectful and very sympathetic approach to me as I have many disabilities, unlike a Brit who told me that as I was disabled with Brain haemorrhage, 16 mini strokes renal failure and many more, that I should juust cdurl up and die. I am not saying that all Brits are the same, because there are lots of very good and helpful ones out there.
Regarding you on about the yanks saying soccer, well what about us guys?, in Scotland we say stand on that, in England you say tread on that, there are loads of different words same thing all over UK, what about Cockney rhyming slang? it goes on and on, so please leave our friends in piece, they aint doing nothin wrong..

I have to agreed with YID ARMY. American football is not football for two reasons. 1 real football you play with your feet and american football only one person kicks the the object . 2 that's not a ball because it's not round.

2006-11-09 07:45:18 · answer #10 · answered by NONAME 5 · 5 2

u see they already inappropriately named a sports as football.
i dont know why? most of the time they hug or carry the ball around, banging each other, trying to bring the guy down, and i think the kicking part comes near the goal post or a penalty near it i think
but i think it should be named somethin as hugball, handball, basbball

now american is added to the word football to differentiate it from real football recognized all over the world. so it is derived from football and the father of american football is football itself :-)

now american consider football to be american football. infact they actually called them football....so for the american to differentiate from the real football, they called it as soccer
even if the name they chosed for their sport doesnt seem right, the name is already too familiar with the masses for it to be changed anyway.
The problem lie with the person who first coin the term doesnt have a good idea of the bigger picture
