Sonority is the quality of being resonant. A metal tuning fork can produce a steady tone because when energy is added by striking it, it vibrates with little loss of energy. If you strike a lump of wet clay the energy is quickly lost with no sustained vibration. A metal rod or bell can produce tones because the metal vibrates in lengths corresponding to the fundamental and higher overtones of sound waves that also travel as lengths of air disturbance (rarefactions and condensations). Actually ordinary bells do not produce the fundamental tone which is why they sound "bell-like."

bcoz, in metals the molecules are "very closely" packed and a molecule receiving the energy and vibrates and passes on the energy to the adjacent molecule more freely and easily.

metals have free electrons and so they are good conductors and have high notes.but i think the reason is their molecular stucture the phenomena occurs due to resonance, search on it you will definetly get the answer...sakura
