I have 1 internet ready pc that is connected via a usb modem.

If I plug a usb wireless receiver in the back of the 1st pc and then plug another wireless receiver into the back of a 2nd pc can I share the 1st pc's internet connection by setting up a network. If so how?

(The router is broken and the bloke that i'm setting this up for is a tightwad!!)

Serious answers only, I gotta go round there tonight.

Cheers,

J

Hi,

I hope they're not just wireless receivers otherwise no transmission can occur ;)

Ok seriously, for a small network, all you need is your two Wi-Fi cards. You connect them using Wi-Fi's ad-hoc mode. It's peer-to-peer networking for Wi-Fi.

If you're building a Wi-Fi network with more than a handful of computers, you'll want to use infrastructure mode, which will require a wireless access point.

If the guy you're helping out is using WinXP, check out the link below (in sources) for some handy pre-reading info.

No this is not possible.
You need a router (not necessarily wireless) to connect both to the web.
Alternative solution if both PC's have network ports is to use a cross over network cable (about £5) to connect both PC's together. A cross over cable is a special type of network cable available from Maplins or PC World. Then share the internet ready PC's internet connection through windows firewall properties.
If I remember correctly you have to check auto detect settings in Internet Explorer on the dumb PC, under tools -> internet options -> connections -> LAN settings

Step 1 Connect your modem to the wireless router using a network cable. Many modern modems come with wireless broadcast capabilities. If this is the case, skip this Step. Step 2 Plug your USB flash drive into an open USB port on your computer. Step 3 Navigate to "Control Panel," "Network and Internet Connections" and "Wireless Network Setup Wizard." Step 4 Follow the onscreen instructions to name your wireless network and choose "use a USB flash drive" when prompted. Choose the drive letter and click "Next" to finish the Wizard. Step 5 Plug the USB flash drive into your router or router/modem. The router will flash a light three times when it has completed configuration. You can also just wait 30 seconds. Step 6 Remove the USB flash card and plug it into each device you want to setup for your wireless network. When plugging into other computers, select "Wireless Network Setup Wizard" when prompted by the computer. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.
