The only real way of protecting limestone is to seal it using some form of water repellent sealer, it needs brushing all over the exposed surfaces. The only problem with this is it may give a gloss finish.
Limestone however will survives exposure for thousands of years, so will outlive even the most recent generation of people as long as it is not cleaned with any acidic products.
