there is a difference between "price" and "value".

price is what it sells for.

value is either the value of the assets minus liabilities, divided by the number of shares, or the value of the expected stream of income, based on dividends.

either one is based on the future performance of the company.

that's based on what they sell, who they sell to, and where they sell it, and how well it is run.

how well it is run is a matter of management knowing what they are doing, and being honest. both are a gamble if you don't know them personally.

bottom line is that if you're new, stick to mutual funds, which are collections of many shares.
