Hate travellers ? Or hate travelling?

If I meet travellers asking stupid questions like you did, I'd hate meeting you too!

Personally, I don't, but common reasons people believe (whether they're true or not) are:
They park their caravans illegally and leave a lot of litter behind, but pay no taxes to the local authority.
They travel from site to site looking for work, often things like building jobs (for private householders) - they do a shoddy job, charge a lot and run like blazes. Do not try to phone the number on that cheap business card they gave you - it doesn't exist.
They live a little bit just outside the law, do things like not send their children to school. They indulge in strange magic-like practises - conjure up an image of the classic toothless old hag with a crystal ball asking you to cross her palm with silver, dearie. This is more an invention of Hollywood than real life.
Let me say again, I DO NOT belive these things, but accept that some travellers at some time have done them - so have christians, schoolteachers, retired soldiers and people who were born in Bognor Regis. Travellers get much too bad press.

I must admit though that a couple of years ago they took over a motorway service station car-park in a sort of rebellion against the local council. The Police had been moving them on repeatedly until they felt they were being harassed. Of course there are THREE sides to every story - their side, the cops' side, and the truth, which is usually somewhere in the middle. They were deliberatly mis-behaving (I think) to prove a point - holding transit-van drag races at high speed in the carpark and suchlike. I felt a little unsafe, but at the end of the day, they're not that much diffderent to anyone else on the planet.

I have seen a few comments stating that people are upset because travelers don't pay local taxes. Well what do you expect? People pay their own local taxes at home. If you traveled someplace new you would not pay taxes there, only back at home. That seems like a really silly reason to not like travelers.

Besides, travelers don't need to pay taxes when they are leaving absolute fortunes in your town on everything from souveniers to taxis. Many places around the world thrive on tourism and lots of your shops, hotels, restaurants and other services are probably thrilled that there are so many people out there who travel.

As far as the people leaving rubbish behind, acting ugly, or behaving badly...I think that is more of an exception than the normal behavior of most travelers. We travel all the time and in many years of world travel I have only seen a few instances of people acting that way. But there are always a few people who will act horrible whether they're at home or in someone else's town. Luckily, there are many more good people who make up for those few bad ones, and you shouldn't let your opinion of the good people be spolied by these rare bad ones.

Do you mean travellers in the Romany, Gypsy sense or travellers in the sense of people who travel in general?
I don't hate anyone, it is a negative emotion to hate and anyway when you are thinking about hating them you are giving them air time, so no I don't hate anybody as a whole group of people.

I, personally, like travellers. Add a little salt and put them on the grill - yummie! - if only they were not so hard to catch...!

Remember, this is wild old europe; people EAT each other over here!!! And if not, we are either commies or nazi (or both). Believe me, this IS TRUE!!!one!!
