depends on what modern means for you.
I'd start with elizabeth peters/barbara michaels novels or lawrence sanders books. great read.
or if you're into chick lit, try books by Claire Betita
if you're into heavy reading, i'd suggest the classics (really). I just finished The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and, yes, it is bewildering indeed.

The investment of your time is the first call. Decide how
much time you will read, per nite, per session, per week.
Whatever you decide, this is one of many criteria that will
aid you to choose the books. Another point is considerable,
what are you already reading? This has to be included in
the next choices. Mysteries and soaps do not mix, nor
histories. Types of details are too varied. Romance and
statistics, data, or studies do not mix, different events of
non-related discussion. Science fiction and mysteries do
not mix, conflicting general knowledge. There are other
hold ups, though those involve poetry versus statistics.
Choose some reading samples if you must. Actually take 1
hour and write a small review, topical, and reconsider.
Reading should be fun, refreshing, even enlightening. WOW.

I love 'White Oleander' - its mother/daughter relationship that is far from usual, but has art and poetry interwined; the life of the artist and the effects on their children....its not as heavy as it seems, it quite easy to read but i find it really beautiful.
For something empowering try the Female Eunich or The Beauty Myth.
Depends what you're into in everyday life. Autobiographies are always a good choice too.

I believe that "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" would be a terrific book for you. It's modern, definitly for women, and just an all out great book. It has love, relationships, dealing with strong emotions. Check it, see if you like it.
