It is a fungal disease. To control it you must spray a fungicide like Captan. Bonide makes a product called Fruit Tree Spray and it has both fungicide and insecticide in it so you can control insects too while you are preventing this disease. I have the Washington Winesap and the Red delicious apples. I spray according to directions, before the flowers bud. After the bees pollinate, then just as the apples are forming. I do it again when the apples are small. About four times during growing. This could be black spot from to much moisture, Do not water the apples, mother nature will take care of that. Watch for bacterial infections and insects, leaf spot, etc. I also spray for bacterial infections.

You won't believe this but, I had trouble with the sun, the trees warmed up faster on the East side in the morning, causing the bark to split, infection setting in. I wrapped the trees to stop this. Lot's of problems you have to stay on top of. You local extension service can help you.
