There's nothing wrong with either gay marriage or with abortion. It should only be up to the persons involved whether they participate or not.
Most normal people see that and don't approve of the neocon position against those things.
Plus, in light of all the republican sex scandles lately, they would have hurt themselves even MORE by harping on that.

Because, believe it or not, there are more important issues at hand. The economy, terrorism, the war in Iraq - these are all issues which many Americans care about more than they care about abortion and gay marriage. If Republicans do nothing but harp on hot-button moral issues, the American public will catch on that they don't have any solutions to the real problems. The majority voted that they were NOT happy with how these issues were being handled by the GOP.
In a way, they DID use moral issues to attract votes. That's part of the reason why so many states had same-sex marriage bans on the ballot - to encourage socially conservative voters to get out and vote. It worked - the marriage amendment passed in all of the states except for AZ. But it wasn't enough - even voters who are anti-marriage equality are dissatisfied with the GOPs on other national issues.

What gave you the impression that The Republicans are not 'in power?' So what if 'they' lost control of the US House and maybe the Senate, plus scarfing up a raft full of Governorships, that doesn't mean they are mortally wounded, The Republicans under one guise or another have held power for more than a hundred years. Sure the 'Donkey' might score an impressive win and plop a s s on to the seat of power but they've never held it long. The minute the Democrats 'win' they become the target and by time honored tradition it is o-k for Republicans to vilify & trashed the a s s es in power. Example; in turbelent 1968 America turned to The Republicans and reaffirmed their love for DICK Nixon in 1972, then the Watergate Scandal, Nixon resigns, Gerald Ford become a fun loveable punching bag and is ousted by Democrat Jimmy Carter in the Year of The Centenial, 1976. Carter endured four years of ridicule before Ronald Reagan raced to rescue, almost all America eager to have right honorable Republicans back in power.
Anyhow, you really need to broaden your perspective if you wish to wish to understand a fraction of the silly world of American politics.
Peace.

Since when is abortion an issue that helps Republicans -- in the same way that you claim it helped Bush in 2004? Don't associate the gay marriage issue directly with the abortion issue, especially since much of America's "middle" supports the latter but not the former.
Lisa, eight states voted on gay marriage and only one of them defeated the proposal. The voters in the other seven states voted for traditional, heterosexual marriage (including Wisconsin, the first state to ever create an anti-discrimination law for gays).
Dogzilla, "most normal people" have voted against gay marriage.

Simple; They raised and spent too much money as usual...on "bashing the Democrats", and blubbering on and on on their useless politics agenda. They should have spent some money on demographics, listen to what the Americans "the real Americans" were thinking about and what were the issues of importance to the average voter. Instead they partied/rallied each other and with their with their "own", yapped for hours and days with their "own" listened to their own stories and "were clapping' for each other. They as the Democrats have done numerous times in the past, forgot to talk and listen to the people!!!!! Now the people have spoken. The true American way. They casted their ballot. They demand a change now! not later. Really you should feel sorry for the Democrats. No plan, no real to say "view", just sex scandals and moral issues against the Republicans. Woe to you Democrats, I say woe to you because both parties have awaken the "sleeping giant". And now the Giant is watching. No more will the true Mr. and Mrs America will let down their guard and let "anyone" take down America. As a final warning from the people of America to all of them...."the people are watching". They follow how each elected official votes on all issues and keep track of the votes in Congress and Senate ...we are more educated then they think. Americans know their constitution and can and will exersise their rights. Clowns beware. These are indeed Historical times. Time to take care of our America and no one elses interests. Democrats have won no victory and Republicans lost no fight. America wants a change. Get on with taking care of our Nation which has been bought and paid for with the blood of millions and now with the blood of the new heroes of Iraq. That's all I say.

Because there is supposed to be a distinction between Church and State. When was the last time you came across somebody whose argument against abortion or gay marriage wasn't either "God hates it" or "EEW! It's gross to me!"? God has no role in decisions made by atheists, Hindus, Sikhs, Wiccans, etc, and enforcing one particular Christian notion goes against the idea of religious freedom (which, incidentally, includes freedom FROM religion, if one so desires). Enforcing one religious view, and preventing any behaviours not in accordance with that religion, would put the States on par with Taliban-controlled countries. And God knows the Christians hate the terrorists trying to take away their freedoms...

History has shown us that a one party congress/executive branch is disfunctional. It was doomed when it was elected. This is likely a better solution to have a true debate on the issues. ...If the dems were in charge, there would be the same problems.

Even an ignorant person can learn over time the stupidity of someone crying wolf all the time rather than trying to solve the problem(s).
(although I had given up on the voters ever learning that)

wow....does this mean the Dems are anti-family?
IMHO, it was a vote against the Republicans, not necessarily for the Democrats.
