can someone please help? My 2 year old son was playing with the hamster and dropped him on the floor, and now he's just lying on his back twitching. I've put him back in his cage, but no matter how hard I try he wont run up and down his tube. I've tried pushing him and bribing him with food but he just lies there twitching.

Well excessive salivation is usually a sign of dental cavities, but if the vet looked at her teeth and mouth and they were fine then I'm not sure. Was this vet an exotic vet?? Normal vets don't have much knowledge of small rodents like hamsters and soemtimes certain symptoms can be a mystery to them. I'm not sure what she had, did she have any other symptoms before you found her with saliva on her? And are you sure it was saliva? The fit she had does sound like heart failure. If she was motionless both times you found her, she could've had a stroke. Also, is it hot where you are? Beacuse it kinda sounds a little like heat stroke; your hamster would appear to be in a deep sleep and its fur could be wet or matted. But they usually get over that if they are cooled down quickly. I'm very sorry for your loss

Make your son wear a sandwich board saying I killed my hamster and flush the hamster down the toilet!

(Or take it to the vets and tell your son everything is gonna be ok) Not as fun but probably less problematic.

Ouch!! - Yeah it sounds like he has a seriously damaged spine. It will probably have to be put down, sorry. To spare your son's feelings just buy a similar looking hamster to replace him, he won't notice. (Well, either £4-5 on a new hammie, or you could pay £100s for surgery which may kill him anyway)

I'm not quite clear on this....is it your hamster or your 2 year old son, who is lying on his back twitching?
Maybe they are one and the same?

Trying rubbing him with warm water he may have a head injury and must be in pain. You could wrap him in a piece of cloth and if this continues it will have to be put to sleep vets are costly but if you cant fix it there are no alternatives.

Phone a vet, if you buy another one, your son will need to be sitting when he's handling the hamster, it's good for children to learn how to handle pets and to learn how to care for them.

Sounds like a nervous reflex reaction from a dead hamster.
