A woman. I used to be a chain smoker - started many years before I met my partner. He used to be a heavy smoker, too (for over ten years), but had quit before we met each other. I'd cut down on cigarettes remarkably since I met him - from two packets a day to two or three cigarettes a day! and for the last five months I haven't smoked at all as we are expecting a baby next spring :)
I've just read some of the posts above and felt like adding a comment. It's not true that smokers' babies are mentally retarded or handicapped - as is often the case with alcohol or drug addicted parents. It's just more likely that a smoker's baby would be somewhat underweight. Anyway, I wanted to be perfectly healthy and do anything I could so that our baby would be fine. It wasn't as difficult as I expected; maybe because for the last two years I had smoked only a few cigarettes a day - I never missed having at least one, however ;) I don't miss it much now and I owe a great deal to my partner's support and appreciation :)

My husband is not a regular smoker. He's been sneaky and has one when he was working at this one place, and didn't tell me. (found out from a friend's husband who worked there) He smokes pot from time to time, and did it before we got married. I told him I really don't care if people smoke pot as long as he didn't do it after we had kids. He said ok but still did it.
I don't smoke but I did have a cigarette or two when I went out with some friends and had a drink. I rarely get to go out anywhere, and I don't smoke anything. He got pissed off at me and said that I am turning into my mother (who is a heavy smoker for 40+ years)
To him, it's ok if he does it when he wants to but not ok if I did it once (and not in front of the kids either) The same goes for other things he's done..... *sigh*

Hubby and I both smoke.
Puke on the ones that say they hate smokers! You're all shallow minded and don't have a clue why we started or what keeps us smoking.
I started in high school, it's called peer pressure and it was considered "cool" to smoke back then. And I've spent thousands of dollars in aids to stop. (Excuse me while I light up). I find it difficult to quit while the hubby smokes in the house and since he's the main money maker, I feel guilty about asking him to go out side. If it weren't for his check covering the house payments I'd be living in a tent! lol
To those who think the smokers can "just put them down, it's a matter of will power", you're wrong. It's a physical addiction just like alcohol or drugs. Read the papers, the story will say that the tobacco companies Add Chemicals to enhance the "Addictive Qualities of the Nicotine in their Product."
I've done my fair share of drugs and never got addicted to them, I've drank my fair share of alcohol and never got addicted it, but the cigarettes are my downfall. And once again, I'm plotting a course to quit.
And for the record, I smoked the whole time I was pregnant with my daughter. She weighed 7 lbs 8 oz when she was born. Her doctor told me she was really healthy and a normal weight. When she started school, she was making A's and B's so they aren't all "mentally retarded" or "handicapped" when born of smokers.

Unfortunately for me my ex was a smoker. I knew going into the relationship that he smoked occasionally but it seemed the more stress he was under the more he smoked. The relationship didn't work primarily because I really couldn't deal with the constant smoking. I would never smoke because it's disgusting to me.

First response to Miss Amal....all children born to smokers are not slow and are not mentally handicapped. I have two children both on honor roll and I am one of those horrid people who smoke. Maybe you should get a clue before you answer a question with a dumb remark. To bad that you do not allow anyone to email you.
Woman, smoke, started a long long time ago. I plan on quitting this month. I have a quit date and setting myself up to quit.
Are you talking cigarettes or pot??? you might want to clarify. Then I would not have been so hard on Miss Amal. If it is pot no I don't do that and it is bad for you
