Dear Mr Trucker,

before blaming the foreign products for the demise of the British Motor Industry, we should ask ourselves why British people decided to buy these foreign products.

Is it because some foreigner had a gun to their heads when they signed the papers?
Or was it may be because the price/quality was better?

It is the British consumer who killed the British car.

The same thing for,as you say 'cheap foreign steel'. The decision to buy 'cheap foreign steel' instead of 'expensive British Steel' was made by British Industries without coercion...

Blame the consumers who make it profitable for the foreign producers; the producers are doing exactly what the British producers would have loved to do elsewhere.

What it means, cheaper cars, cheaper products... But it's still your choice to consume the cheap foreign goods or the expensive British goods.

* Let's face it, Britain's motor industry was never competitive. Sure Minis look cute and Rollers are elegant, but neither were sufficently competitive in terms of quality, efficiency or price to the general motoring public as say Toyotas or BMWs.

* Would you want to be forced to buy only Vauxhalls, which cost more and are of an inferior quality to a (say) Mitsubishi?

* Would you rather your tax dollars be spent on health care, defence, education and public infrastructure, or should it be spent keeping Rover solvent through subsidies?

* The same can be said for the steel industry, dairy industry or anything else that Britain has lost its competitive edge in.

* the only people who have to worry are the unintelligent and lazy.
