One of the latest theories (not widely accepted) is that it was caused by the interaction of two other universes at the sub-atomic super-string level. This collision caused a catclysmic explosion at a point of singularity, creating all the matter and energy we now have in our universe, which then began to expand and cool.
Simple isn't it?

Another theory is that the universe is a state of perpetual pulsation. It expands, and then crashes in on itself to a singularity point, and then explodes again, this has been going on forever.
Even simpler isn't it?

This could explain why so many people believe in God. It is simpler to understand.

Which theory you believe is up to you.

It was not a chemical reaction, because individual elements did not exist in the singularity. It was a pure energy expansion in which individual atoms (matter) were created much later as the universe expanded. Significant "Later" in big bang theory can be nanoseconds.

if we knew, one of the top mysteries would be sorted, but there are plenty of theories
