Restoration of image is different thing. The main point is that american people have realised and accepted that the policies of Mr. Bush administration were not right. Mr. Bush says that now american are more safe than ever. Its a plain lie. If its true then why there are warning for american people NOT to visit that, that , that country and that , that area.
Check the previous years news papers, there havnt been any warning like that. And ameicans were welcome in part of the world~ which is not like that now ~ then where is that 'safety' generated and provided now.

As fickle people who can be totally committed to something and then change their minds and pretend they never made the committment three years later? As a nation the world would be foolish to trust as an ally? As a country dominated by the media's ability to obfuscate or manufacture reality?

Yes. We've restored that image.

It's a step in that direction, yes. But it'll take a lot more. It would be impossible to accurately assess the amount of damage that's been done. Let's see what the appointment of Robert Gates will bring us!!

I really wish that it would, but unfortunately I think that it will take a little bit more than that. Actions speak louder than words. We are so deep, I don't see a way out, but that is what they have experts for.
