Two years ago my brother shot and killed our dad. It was an accident, but I am being billed by the coroners office regarding the body. He was buried 2 yrs ago. I have refused to pay because I don't think I should. Even though it was an accident, I think my brother is responsible. What do you think? This is such an emotional subject.

Yes your brother is responsible for that and should want to considering he had the problem- not saying that offensively to him but he should and you need to let him know that.... It's probably really hard for him to see what he did and he doesn't want to deal with that fully yet even though it's been two years... Just talk to him and help him in a gentle way see, sorry for you loss...

Im assuming your mom is not in the picture? Because if she is not divorced from your dad, she would be the responsible person for such bill. The only other reason I would see you being billed is if your brother is a minor and you were the only adult living in the house, or if you are the executor of his estate- then you would be responsible for all bills, including burial costs.

If your brother is unwilling to pay the whole amount have you's discussed maybe going halves in the bill, even though it was accidentally your brother who unfortuneatly shot your father he is still your father and maybe going halves would ease the situation.

I would tell the coroner to send the bill to your brother.

You're not responsible for a debt that you did not incur. Your father's estate should have been responsibel.
