I would try a team building exercise that tests all of them. Maybe have them work on a project for the betterment of the company, and see who comes out as a leader, and who lets everyone else do their work.
You could also ask the people under them, in strict confidence of course, how their manager works. Support staff usually knows who works and who doesn't.
