You should go Kuala Lumpur, where you can find good cheap stuffz in Petaling Street, Sungei Wang and whole lot more. A hotel like Hilton which located very near KL central is a strategic place to stay in cause there are lotsa transpotations there too.

You can get a room from about $150, I think.
It's in the shopping district, near many malls.

well..i can help on the shopping part..
if you want branded shopping,do go to klcc as most of the shop in klcc is branded shop..
if you want to go for some affordable shopping, go to Bukit Bintang area( there is Lot 10,Sg. Wang,Times Square, KL Plaza)
apart from those i mention above..there's also 1-utama as they just expand and not bad for shopping..

Penang is great, it's well known for all the good food they have over there. Malacca/Melaka is a historical city, you might want to visit if you're into historical sites.
If you're keen on visiting beaches try Pangkor Laut ( photos at http://www.myoutdoor.com/pangkor/Pangkor_Laut/pangkor_laut.asp?hotelID=46 ). I'm Malaysian but I've never been to Pulau Perhentian ( photos at http://www.pulauperhentian.com.my/ ), but my American friends tell me it's beautiful over there.

Suria KLCC below the towers is a great mall..chk out bukit bintang also for shopping
