Black panthers are not a species, as other people have pointed out, but are black or melanistic forms of three big cats - jaguars, pumas and leopards. The highest rate is found in the jaguar but even then it is a very rare form.
How much footage of jaguars have you ever seen - very little as filming secretive big cats in tropical jungles is really difficult anyway, but to find a melanistic one at the same time would be a really rare find.
I also suspect, but have no evidence, that when big cats were collected as curios for zoos that black forms (and also white tigers) would have been in great demand and probably worth a fortune to local 'collectors' and so the proportion of these variants in zoos is probably much higher in captivity than in the wild - where in fact the frequency might even have been lowered by removal of affected animals.

The reason why there is so much footage of Lion prides etc on TV is bcause it is easily obtained relative to other wildlife photography, Cruise about in a Land Rover and take your shots. Far more difficult to get shots in amongst trees in a forest with a cat like a jaguar which doesn't want to be seen and knows how to melt into its environment. Certainly not extinct yet, under threat ,yes as all animals of rainforests are, are you likely to see long films about them, doubtful.

Black Panthers are Jaguars of South / Central America. Occasionally you get a black one.
Pumas/Cougars/Mountain Lions can also go black but rarely.
Leopards have been known to go black as well.
The overwhelming majority of Black Panthers though are Jaguars.
