Oil is quite important to your car, but if you have any problems, your oil light should go on and/or your can may run worse and/or hotter. You should not check too often like every day as that may contaminate fluids.
Look more under your car when you move for any dark spots which may indicate some leak or something other then water, like oil.
Transmission oil may be even more important as a transition is much more complex then an engine so lubrication is that much more important. You may be able to get somewhere on a bad engine, but not on a bad transition.
Other fluids like engine coolant, brake fluid, power steering and windshield washer fluids usually are stored in transparent reservoirs so you should be able to see if they are full. You should NOT open the brake fluid or power steering to often as they are prone to contamination and brake fluid absorbs moisture and can deteriorate.
Oil and transition fluid should be checked about once a moth but no more then once a week, unless you feel something might be wrong with the car. The rest you should be able to see through the reservoirs, but don't check too often.
Windshield washer just cannot be empty but otherwise not very important. I just fill it up when my washer fluid indicator light goes on, it is cheap and you can buy it just about everywhere and just pour it in.
Also, checking the fluid, can only tell you if you are running low, or if it may be dirty, but cannot tell you if it is bad. You would need more test to check the quality of your fluid. It is best to replace fluids per your cars maintenance schedule and/or use good quality products like synthetic fluids for the best life and performance.

HeavyHaul is right!
All of your fluids should be checked often. Every time you fill the gas tank is good, but at least once every two weeks.
Why???? You say?
How would you like to find out that you had a brake system leak by having them fail when you needed them the most.
Low brake fluid can indicate overall brake wear and leaks. If there are no leaks and low fluid, it can indicate that the linings have worn and that you may need brake service or adjustment. The color of the fluid also indicated possible problems.
Wiper (I hope you meant washer). We wash/clean the windhield to see, right? How safe is a dirty obstructed windshield especially when you have no washer fluid in the resevoir when you need to clean it at highway speeds?
You left out transmission, and power steering fluid. Both are important as well.
Oil is the blood of an engine. Comparable to your own as a human. Abuse/neglect your body/blood and you won't live long. Same for engines. Oil lubricates, protects and cools critical engine components. Critical as in just like your blood is critical to your existence. In general, oil changes are recommended every 3000 Miles. Best source for info like this is the OWNER'S MANUAL. If you don't have one, eBay or a local salvage yard can find you one cheap.
As with any vehicle, the maintenance schedule recommended by the manufacturer should be followed in order to get the most out of that vehicle. They (manufacturer) built the car, they know how to maintain it. Same for filters and other maintenance items. These of course will be in the Owner's manual as well.
THE BIGGEST WHY???? go ahead and neglect your fluids, skip some maintenance, take the safety risk of poor vision or faulty brakes, and risk a collision or killing somebody (maybe yourself, or one of your children). $$$$$$$
But my favorite answer is...
When you bring your car to someone like me and throw a fit and complain when I tell you how much it will cost to repair your car, I am ripping you off because I am a mechanic, and the car is a piece of crap etc..
There's nothing wrong with the car
There's nothing wrong with (alleged rip off) mechanics
Something's wrong with you. You could have taken a few minutes, asked a few questions and performed, or even paid someone else a few dollars, to do the scheduled maintenance on your car and would have saved a lot of money in the end. $$$$$
If you don't know much about cars, that is fine! It's really simple. Find a mechanic that you trust, and just drop it off with him. Tell him you need to find and perform the scheduled maintenance on the car. If he's a good honest professional mechanic, he will do it, and you won't have to worry about it until he tells you when you need to bring it back for the next service. Pay him for HELPING you out, and have a nice day!

Regardless what anyone says the brakes are the most important part of any vehicle on the road fact. you must be able to stop .even if it don't run and it rolling down a hill you need brakes to stop it, 2 nd is the fuel system 3 rd tires , 4th then the oil ,great question noted people saying oil that is so incorrect, you can be low on oil and drive the car, you low on brake fluid it a new ball game but I understand they have no mechanical back ground

Engine Oil, the engine is the heart of your vehicle if it dies, so everything comes with it... unlike break fluid there is always an indicator on your dash board so you always see if there is a need of attending to it, as for the wiper you would live another day if anything happens to it... but with the engine oil you have to personally check it, meaning opening the hood of your car and seeing for yourself the oil rod if there's a need of adding more oil or having your car oil changed.. tnx!!
