be either a chemincal imbalance in the brain, for which drugs are the best solution as it rectifies the imbalance. This type of depression does not nescessarily have any root or reason drugs may be necessary for a very long time or forever depending on the severity of the imbalance.
Depression can also be caused by an act or event that affects you adversly. This can be treated with counselling etc.. and maybe drugs for the short term whilst the cause is being uncovered.

In everyday language "depression" refers to any downturn in mood, which may be relatively transitory and perhaps due to something trivial. This is differentiated from Clinical depression which is marked by symptoms that last two weeks or more and are so severe that they interfere with daily living.
This can be treated with anti- depresants as it increases the mood, by increasing the levels of dopamine which are low in depressed people causing the deflated moods.

Some of them say it is frozen anger (But that is just the nasty ones) It comes in two types, reactive, where there is a known cause and endogenous, where it manifests itself with no rhyme or reason.
The lazy, ignorant and dim doctors treat it with medication, the most efficatious way is a talking cure. Unfortunatly, there is usually a long wait to see a trained psychotherapist, when you do get to see one there is no guarantee that they are any good. Only about 1 in 10 of them have any sort of clue, all of them do not and will not speak your language, they will want you to speak theirs. Mostly they are all institutionalised, this is why they require you to think and talk like them. I am sorry if this is a rather bleak picture, but it is based on painful experience, not only of 30 years of depression, but of having to deal with stupid, ignorant manipulative, uncaring and dangerous "caring professionals"

There are various reasons for depression. It is not necessarily a bad thing. It might be telling you that there is something you were supposed to deal with but you overlooked it or denied...
Treatment: depends on the form of depression, stage and we all are different so different treatment should be applied.
I could tell you more about the treatment if you give me more detailed account of your state.

Re the first answer, psychologists can't prescribe drugs, that's a psychiatrist. I'd say in layman's terms a level of sadness which affects your ability to function normally.

in my experience they all explain it differently ! have just spent three weeks in a psychiatric ward after my latest suicide attempt half of the dr`s wanted to give me drugs the other half wanted to talk me better ! think it really depends on what works for you and how bad your depression is ! cognitive behavourial therapy is probably the best preventitive cure for depression but as 1/10 people suffer it to different degrees finding an absolute cure or treatment for everyone is like finding a needle in a haystack !

Agree with jeanjean and that site its good :)
But I have been diagnosed with depression its a pain in the bum, no one seems to understand it.
The way my doctor explained it anyway was it comes in three forms, mild, moderate and clinical. He admitted it wasnt his area of expertise so referd me to a pshycologist. I'll tell you when I am at the top of the waiting list :/

there aint no reason for it really. i would go to your doctor talk to him tell him how low you feel. and he try some kind of anti depressent. or if you are feeling really bad he might send you to see a councilor. but it does get better i promise you. hope that helps. all the best.
