you can used the protective glass shield or up to date glasses but as far as sitting in front of a computer for a long period of time it is not harmful

1) Sit on a chair that is comfortable
2) Don't bend towards the computer
3) Keep blinking your eyes and remember dont stop
4) Dont sit for long hours

the best way (economical) is to decrease the brightness of your monitor...it will help you a lot.
another way is to go out /peep thru a window and look for a tree or something which at some distance...this definately helps our eye...
(this is something i hav read from internet)
you can see the difference yourself...i hav tried this..and is useful...

take breaks and turn your head to look and focus on things that are farther away and maybe something closer to you to basically "stretch" your eyes. Other than that...if it hurts your eyes try diming your screen a little.
