I mean, Ann says that Charlotte kiled HER and not Mr. R who is the true murderer. So, Mr.R would have to see Charlotte, who he loved, being hanged. Ann gets her revenge on the two

She says Emma kills who? Mr.R or the man in the forest?
OK, I see. The theme is revenge.
The psychology is that love can cause you to do things that others, and even yourself, would not think you are capable of., such as Emma leaving Anne while she lies dying, and Emma lying about who killed her.
