I tell myself a story and hopefully fall asleep, it is like counting sheep. If I really can't fall asleep I watch TV or read, or play with my game boy, or get up and go out for a drive, or a walk.

drink red wine till drop....

read a book...
or
play around wth my pets...

talk to my fiance till i fall asleep...
and when none of the above works then....
Normally when i have tried all the above and still i cant sleep, the best thing i do is just drive to the beach (which is only 2 minutes drive from my house) just look at the water, feel the wind and have some smoke till the sun rises. Sometimes whn people cant sleep there must be a reason, well in my case i believe the sun invites me to welcome him rise, afterall, after every fall the sun rises again with grace...when i cant sleep it means tht i have a great problem and when i look at the sun rise at the beach this reminds me tht life is all about falling down and rising up again, just like the sun....

Meditate,Read books,Listen to reiki music-Hands of Light,
Count slowly 100 to 1 (reverse counting),You will fall asleep before reaching 1.

Take a bath, eat something,get comfy laying down and do not get up.
If it is insomnia this is something different! Then put in a good DVD, get onto yahoo answers, make goodies for the boys when they wake up for school in the morning. Clean the house. Work on projects in the house.....

I have a prescription for just that possibility. I am about to take one. Good night, a little later, after the pill takes effect.
Oh, if I didn't have a prescription, Benadryl, Sominex, or Tylenol PM worked well.
Chamomile(camomile) tea is also very relaxing. It is quite good.

3 shots of Vodka shaken twist of lemon, and 2 muscle relaxers you will be out like a light. Believe me it will be the best 8 hrs sleep you ever had. So refreshed in the morning too...
