Granite has just been installed on our kitchen countertop. But the edges still have scratches. How can I make it as shiny as the countertop itself? Also, what is a good sealer for granite? Do I need to apply one now?

It does not sound like your tops are finished correctly. The edges should be just as nice as the tops. Call the installer and ask for the job to be corrected.

They should have discussed sealer. You want to seal immediately if it is not sealed. A stain will be impossible to remove. Buy sealer and a home store (Menards, Home Depot, Lowes)

To polish marble/granite you need diamond polishing pads, with a Velcro backing and a 4 inch variable disc sander. You can purchase this at most stone/tile supply places or on line with Braxton and Bragg. com. The pads as a whole is not cheap and there are wet polishing pads and dry ones. Also they range from 50 grit to 5000 grit. If you plan on doing a lot of polishing get good quality wet pads you wont be sorry.

A good way to pollish your granite or marble is to use a pollishing compound and a buffer. this will make it shine. as for your sealer question. Tile Lab makes a very good sealer. its in a green bottle and will last 20yrs with proper maintance(dont use any bleaches like tile-ex) the sealer has teflon in it and it will replell your water and most if not all stains as well. is this counter solid granit or in 12x12 tiles? if its the tiles then dont use the sealer for 7days after you have grouted.

Not really. not much will stick to formica (as far as finishes like polyurethane). only thing that would work is pour on acrylic glaze that dries to high gloss but that's a lot of work you're better off replacing them with the shiny models (about $120 for 8 feet at home depot). don't try fine sand it either, you'll ruin it.

A cheap and inexpensive way to do this would be by using wet sandpaper. start with 40 grit and slowly work your way up to a 3000 grit paper. Finally, buff with a polishing compound.

do not try to fix this problem. call the company that installed them and have them fix the problem. trying to use a high speed buffer and rubbing compound on your counter top can be tricky plus you could damage the counter top and would have to have it repaired which is also expensive
