I think this is a good question, car could be restricted to whatever country they are in as part of the MOT or something to stop people excessively speeding as there no need for a car to do 120 on british motorways. But on the other hand, i would hate a restriction, if i could only go up to 70 i would hate it, i want my freedom and don't want some government to stop me from using my car as it was made.

I drive at the speed i feel comfertable and safe which is the main thing and we are taught when learning to drive to respect other road users. Admittedly some young drivers think they rule the road, they should raise the age limit to 21 i think, will be much much safer and so fewer accidents.

Just drive with respect and curtiousy and if everyone does there will be no problems.

Just to add to what's written already: if a car was only powerful enough for a top speed of 70mph, it would struggle on hills and have almost no acceleration at 60mph. If it was electronically limited by the manufacturer this could be overridden by "chipping" just as people do to PlayStations. People are allowed to drive cars at any speed off the public highway, so arguably you should be able to drive your 150mph car at 150mph on a private race track if you choose. Obviously you might end up with a fractured spine, but at least no-one else got hurt and it means another macho numpty is off the road!

They just can. And there's no speed limit in Germany and other countries on the motorways.

And which speed limits?

There's a 10mph limit near my house. Should all cars be restricted to 10mph?

I could do 70 through there in a car restricted to 70, that would be 60 over the limit.

Your oppinionated immature student views are unworkable. You'll learn this a lot as you grow up and join the real world.

Good luck and no bad feelings intended.

There are no speed limits on some German and Australian roads! Plus similar technical innovations that go into making a vehicle go that fast go into the normal cars that make them run more fuel efficient and to produce less pollution so there are advantages of pushing the limits of the combustion engine.

Different countries have different speed limits. And there's nothing to stop you taking your car to a race track and travelling legally at high speed.

The majority of accidents don't happen on Motorways/Highways - they happen on local roads - where the speed limit is much lower, so designing a car that's can't do more than 70mph won't help when the limit is 30mph.

Generally the faster a car can go, the best the safety equipment with it - i.e. it will have brakes capable of withstanding the performance which will be better than a standard car

So that cap and glove wearing doddery old gits can moan about it and say "but you wont get there any quicker" as you zoom past on the inside lane at twice the speed they are doing in the middle lane, because they took there test in 1902 in a farm cart and have no concept of road regulations, Of course you will get there quicker! your going faster dammit! some of us have lives to get on with and better things to do other than block up roads while you try to remember what indicators are for!
