They last years... perhaps decades (but they haven't been around that long). But this depends on the environments they are kept in. But them in a damp, dusty, dirty room and mold could grow and damage the material the disks use... but store them properly in a moderately low humidity environment in protective casings, and they'll last a LONG time. The 1000 write estimate is based on the fact that they tend to get scratched over time.

DVD-RW discs may be written to about 1,000 times before needing replacement.

a dvd-rw will last thru about 1000 burn cycles, and if looked after corectly, should last 3 years at least, but depeding on the quality, maybe less maybe more :)

If you scratch it then it is a waste from the first time so keep the surface clean

based on my experience, it depend on what the brand is, such as yamaha, plextor and so on. dont buy the cheap one like sony,samsung,benq....because they have cheap lens...if u dont believe, just try one..
