A fascinating question!
I look forward to reading some of the replies!
From Birmingham in the 1960's (UK, not one of the cheap export Birminghams...) we used to say 'Arley Barley' if you needed to remove yourself from the game for a moment... but as to it's etymology... not a clue!

We had television it, where you had to say a name of a tv programme to avoid being tagged, you couldn't say the same one twice or you'ld be it, not quite the same, but similar. I lived in High Wycombe, but I remember that a girl who had recenlty moved from, I think, King's Lynn, introduced us to it.

We used to call it Tick and also Off ground tick, i think the way of being safe was to be off ground or to have a certain area on a wall that was called base and as long as you had your hand on that wall you were ok. (Cheshire)

We would say "BAR B.A.R BAR" You say the word, then spell it, and say the word again. I've never heard any of the another peoples answers. - I guess different people play it different ways.

"Time-Out" or "Safe"... Generally we'd agree beforehand what particular word we'd use... I remember we even had "Boom" (with fist in the air) as our word for the game. Played it in the U.S. and the Philippines.
