Germanic cultures are pretty direct. There is little of the shyness of asking a girl for a date that you may find in the UK.
Better still, why don't you invite him out? If you feel uncomfortable with this, invite him along when a group of you are going out.

Trust me...if a German guy likes you, you'll likely have to call a cop to get him to leave you alone!!! The one thing German men are known for by American women(I'm an American guy in Germany at the moment), it's their inability to take subtle suggestions to buzz off!
