no one really knows why humans dreams. there r ideas that we dream cause it's a way for our brains to keep exercises those pathways between brain cells, or it could be cause it's a way for our brain to deal with the different thoughts we have in our heads, or it could be for completely different reasons that we haven't found yet.
and yes, other animals dream. for example--haven't u ever been near a dog or a cat while they're sleeping? it can be very obvious sometimes when a dog dreams cause they'll kick their feet or sometime whine a little bit in their sleep. cats will twitch their legs and such when they're dreaming sometimes.

Brain is active and processing of sounds, lights, scent and events continue whether we are awaken or sleeping. The same process happens to animals too. Plenty of times i have seen cows dreaming and making small moves, eye balls rotating, and dogs trying to bark .

Dreams help connect our conscious to our subconscious. We process events, memories, ideas, and emotions in our dreams in ways that our conscious mind can't.
And yes, other primates, such as gorillas, have been known to have dreams.
