Which part of the island did you like best?

I was born and raised in Cuba til I was 19. The island has a lot of places tourists would find very interesting. I am from the area of Cienfuegos and it's beautiful down there, mountains, beaches, waterfalls, all within 45 minutes of each other. As for the girl who says she hopes Castro lives so that the island won't lose it's magic... I hope he dies tomorrow, because of him my mother can't get the medicines she needs for her asthma, my brother and sister can't get aspirin for their children when they are ill, no one in my family makes enough money to be able to survive if it wasn't for me being here and sending them what I can (medicine, money, etc.) It really astounds me to hear people like that who are ignorant to the fact of what is going on in Cuba with the people of it's impoverished country. Yea it's great for tourists to see the "time warp" cars from the 50's, old buildings, etc. but please think of how the people are living before you speak.

I've been, and it was a lovely country, with lovely people. They were generally happy in spite of the hardships - like electricity which rotated throughout the city of Havana. The "equality" between school children was exibited loudly by the school uniforms. The darker the skin, the closer to brown the uniforms were. I hired a prostitute for a guide because she had good English. She was fantastic, and I saw a lot of Old Havana that most tourists miss, but I was amazed at how many of the stores she took me to because without having foreign currency to show or a tourist in hand, she was not allowed into those stores.
It's still a lovely island, and you should go if you get the chance, whether Castro passes or not.

I have never been but am planning to go with my husband and children next year to visit his family. We have been married for 12 years and it is very difficult to get over there, this will be our first time as a family and the first time my kids will be meeting their grandparents. I agree with Harvardcub 100% from what my husband has told me, the woman who wants Fidel to live should be forced to live in Cuba with no help from outside and see how much "magic & atmosphere" there really is...

We went to a wedding in Holguin in 2005. Cuba is a beautiful country - the Cuban people are great - however, it is a very poor country, we saw some very sad sights when we were there.
