Kerosene or paraffin oil is a colorless flammable hydrocarbon liquid primarily used today as a heating oil, as fuel in jet engines, and as a solvent for insecticide sprays.

The following are some of its uses in modern times:
>> Kerosene is now mainly used as a fuel for jet engines (more technically Avtur, Jet-A, Jet-A1, Jet-B, JP-4, JP-5 or JP-8).
>>Used as a fuel or fuel component for diesel and tractor engines, and rockets.
>>Used as a carrier in insect sprays.
>>Used as a cooking fuel to some portable stoves for backpackers and to less developed countries.
>>Used to remove lice from hair (unadvisable practice being painful and potentially very dangerous).
>>Used in portable stoves as a heating fuel ,sometimes used as a heat source during power failures. (Avoid use of portable kerosene heaters in indoor areas without a chimney due to the danger of buildup of carbon monoxide gas.
>>Used in Japan as a home heating fuel for portable and installed kerosene heaters.
>>Used by the Amish ( Christian denomination who limit use of electric appliances for religious reasons) for kerosene-powered versions of appliances such as refrigerators.
>>Used as a solvent for greases and insecticides.
>>Used in the entertainment industry, as a fuel for fire dancing.
>> Used to power kerosene space heaters built into kitchen ranges that kept many farm and fishing families warm and dry through the winter.

You must be from the U.K. In the U.S. we don't refer to kerosene as paraffin oil. To us Yankees paraffin is the name given to artificial wax which is why one person answered that paraffin was used in canning. Today most of the highly refined kerosene is used as jet fuel.
