Nope. No sound. Soundwaves, yes. Without the diaphram of the eardrum vibrating there is no such thing as sound. Of course woodland creatures would hear it, most of them have eardrums too. (as oppose to snakes) Sound does not exist on it's own, it does indeed need a reciever to actually be considered sound. So, taking away all creatures with an ear as a reciever... the tree will only make soundwaves.

Well does a tape recorder or similar recording device still record something if the record but is activated remotely and then the tree falls?

Yes people dont need to hear something for it to make a sound, ever heard of dog whistles?

Assuming there are no animals (such as a human) with auditory organs nearby, then no, a sound is not made. However, the falling tree will still create the capacity for sound (by creating sound waves), but, without someone or something to "hear" it there is no sound.

I think it does make a sound. And where in the world is there no animals, not even insects or anything, to notice that a tree just fell down? Of course it makes a sound.

This is actually a very old question that can create a lot of debate on the subject. (Just like the chicken and the egg question.) Personally, I believe that it still makes a sound, whether or not there are any humans around to report on what they heard.

Yes, the animals in the woods heard it fall, thus it has made a sound.

No cry goes unheard. It's similar to the half full/half empty debate, and boils down to the view you have of life. In fact the question would be does it matter? It still happened, but does anyone notice, or care? Just thought I'd add to the debate.

no, it will not. in order to make a sound, you have to have a receiver. (the ear) and if no ones ear receives the vibrations of the tree falling, you have no sound. and you are NOT a retard. perhaps the wise guy in your first answer may be one.

sure, it makes a valid, purely because nobodys there doesnt mean sound doesn't exist. similar to in case you became your radio on on your bedroom and also you walked outdoors, no matter if you won't be able to listen it that is nonetheless playing song.

No it wont. It will create disruptions in the air, that, if there were a human ear close by, would be processed as sound.
