Ok, I don't know if this works or not, but on TV today there was a commercial for intelius.com, and they said they will give you one background check for free, if you type in the code "TV" in the promo code box. I don't know if it works or not, but it is worth a try.

Otherwise...I believe they cost $$$.

When someone like a potential employer has a background check done on you the potential employer pays for it, not you. There are, as you probably know, agencies who do the background checks as a business.

If you wanted to do a background check on someone you'd have to pay for it (and you may have to show identification, explain why, etc., depending on the situation).

They are as free as you want them to be, or they cost as much as you are willing to pay. For Employers and stuff, yes they are free, to a limited degree. To average citizen, yes, they are free. Go to any Courthouse, find the Clerk of the Cout, ask them for information. Court Records are Public Documents.
Well they use to be.
