I do know a way around it, you can log into:
www.freeproxy.ca
It's a proxy site, you enter the URL of ebay (or whatever) and it takes you there, and your trail will stop at the proxy site. It is slow however.
But beware, I work in IT myself, this is a battle I am always fighting. If you get caught using proxies to reach sites that your IT department has restricted, you will very likely get fired. Your time at work belongs to your boss, it's that simple. If he restricted it, it is probably because you spend too much time on there, so play safe and do not use it so much.
The safest thing to do would be to stop using ebay at work, and use it at an internet cafe instead, failing that get the internet at home, and wait to use it there. Unless you really don't like your job?

Your employer owns that connection and is monitoring your whereabouts on the computer. They probably know every place you go to and what you write. I would either buy a laptop that uses a wireless modem or wait until you get home to use the computer for your own pleasure.

email ebay and tell them you cannot access their site because the server you're using has a block on it. they have a program they'll email you which sets up a proxy thus allowing you to enter through what is called an "internet wormhole." i do not know the exact thing they email to you, but i do know it works. good luck.

Presumably it was because no work was getting done because all the staff were on it checking their bids or sales.
If you truly only want to do it officiallly i.e. in your lunch hour then talk to your administrator about which computer you can log on to or a password to use. (They can tell if you are on at other times!)
Otherwise - get back to work, that's what they're paying you for.

Tell your manager that you waste your time on personal activity at work and as you are unable to justify your remuneration, you intend to leave at once. Access EBay from home.

Yes. Get on with the work they are paying you for, and indulge in your need for on line auctions in your own time, on your own computer in your own home and using your own Internet connection. Simple isn't it?
Otherwise you are stealing company time that they are paying you for, using company computers for a purpose you are not authorised or paid to use them for and stealing the company internet connection that you are not paying for (theft again) to pursue personal interests. Go on. Go for the burn and improve your productivity instead.
