In the same fashion, what's the point of footwear at all? Ankle boots are ankle boots - they're what you wear when you don't want to wear your knee high boots or your court shoes. They look good under jeans and long skirts. You don't have to worry about calf sizes when you buy a pair of ankle boots.
They have both purpose and a place in any fashionista's wardrobe.

To wear under jeans or long pants.
But the really short ankle boots don't look good on anyone - model or mortal.

Some people have larger calves that do not fit into long boots - like me for example!

It is fashionable this season but this too shall pass..........Oh and people with larger calves enoy this style and folks that just don't want a lot of "boot" on their legs.

They work perfectly with jeans and long pants. Not to mention, no squishing or pinching or battling with zippers if your calves are more generous than a strand of spaghetti.

I've often wondered the same thing. they don't go great under trousers as they catch, they don't look as good as kneelength boots with a skirt. its a mystery to me too!
