Is the diamond in a setting? If so, dip a damp toothbrush into some baking soda and scrub all the surfaces you can reach. To help loosen up any gunk on the parts you can't reach, put the piece of jewelry into boiling water for a few minutes (- do not do this if you can wiggle your stone in it's setting- it's too loose!). After you remove the diamond piece from the water, either rinse it under the faucet at full blast, or put it in a cup with some warm water and shake vigorously.
If you have a loose diamond, just clean it with Windex- that's what professional jewelers do all the time!

A soft tooth brush and industrial alcohol (drink the gin and don't waste it for cleaning) A wooden tooth pick will help to remove the hard rubbish that collects on the back of a stone. What ever you do NEVER put any stone into boiling water, the thermal shock can cause untold damage. If you really must use hot water put the item into cold water standing on something so that it is not in contact with the bottom of the pan and SLOWLY heat the water.
